London-based oil giant BP and its contractors are appealing notices issued by the Interior Department that found the companies violated federal offshore drilling regulations during the massive 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill resulting from the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers.
The violation notices are the first step toward imposing penalties on the companies, which include well operator BP; rig owner Transocean; and oilfield services company Halliburton.
