Fifty-seven rigs were drilling today in North Texas' Barnett Shale, unchanged from a week earlier, according to RigData.
The leading counties were: Tarrant, 12 rigs; Montague, 10; Johnson and Wise, 7 each; Jack, 6; and Parker, 5.
The leading operators were: Devon Energy, 10 rigs (Johnson and Parker, 3 each; Denton and Wise, 2 each); EOG Resources, 8 rigs (Montague, 6; Johnson and Cooke, 1 each); Chesapeake Energy, 6 (Tarrant, 4; Johnson, 2); and XTO Energy, 6 (Tarrant, 4; Johnson and Parker, 1 each).
The number of active U.S. drilling rigs fell by eight this week, to 1,989. Rigs drilling for oil rose by 18, to 1,263, while natural gas rigs fell by 25, to 720, according to Houston-based oilfield services firm Baker Hughes. Six rigs were listed as miscellaneous.
The number of oil rigs, buttressed by high crude oil prices, was the highest since Baker Hughes began keeping separate oil and gas rig counts in 1987. The gas-rig count was the lowest since October 2009, a reflection of depressed gas prices.
The Texas rig count fell by five, to 909.
