Active drilling rigs in the Barnett Shale slipped to 42, down three from a week ago, according to RigData. Wise County was the busiest with eight rigs, followed by Jack with seven, and Montague, Denton, Parker and Palo Pinto, all with four. That's an unusually high number for Palo Pinto, which showed two vertical wells seeking crude oil, a vertical seeking oil and gas, and a horizontal seeking oil and gas.
In the United States overall, drilling rigs looking for crude oil slipped 12 from a week ago, the fifth decline in eight weeks on lower oil prices, while natural gas rigs were up two for a rare increase, according to Baker Hughes. The total rig count was down 12 to 1,837, with 1,398 oil rigs and 437 gas rigs, plus two miscellaneous.
