Using natural gas to generate electricity uses only about 60 percent of the water used to generate the same amount of power from burning Texas lignite, a low-grade coal, according to a study this week by the Webber Energy Group at the University of Texas at Austin. This study compared the use of water for NG extraction, but does not account for fracking water being single use and then disposed in injection wells whereas the water used for cooling returns to the water cycle.
