Active drilling rigs in the Barnett Shale rose by three this week to 30 as the field’s northern counties, which generally contain more liquids, continued to draw most of the interest. Montague and Denton counties were the busiest with six rigs each, followed by Jack and Wise counties with four each and Tarrant County with three, according to RigData.
Nationally, the number of active rigs rose by nine to 1,757, according to Baker Hughes. There were 1,395 rigs seeking crude oil, up five, 355 seeking natural gas, up two, and seven miscellaneous, also up two. A year ago there were 1,965.
