Active drilling rigs in the Barnett Shale rose by three this week to 33 as smaller independents have gained ground, according to RigData. Eagleridge Operating of Dallas matched Devon Energy as the field’s biggest driller, each with four rigs. Devon, Chesapeake, XTO and EOG, the field’s four biggest producers, accounted for just 10 rigs altogether.
The U.S. rig count dipped by nine to 1,767 as drilling for crude oil took a tumble, said Baker Hughes Inc. Rigs seeking oil declined by 23 to 1,365, while those seeking natural gas jumped by 14 to 380. Eight were classed as miscellaneous. A year ago there were 1,864 active rigs.
