Active drilling rigs in the Barnett Shale took a steep dip this week, falling by seven to 28, according to RigData. Icy weather could have contributed to the slide, but the rig count was at 27 three weeks earlier before making a two-week run. Wise County was the busiest with seven rigs, followed by Montague with five and Denton and Jack counties with four each. Devon Energy was running the most rigs with four, followed by EOG Resources and Eagleridge Operating with three each.
Nationally, the rig count was up seven to 1,782, according to BakerHughes. Rigs seeking crude oil were up 14 to 1,411, rigs seeking natural gas fell by six to 369 despite higher prices on the cold weather in much of the country, and miscellaneous rigs were down one to two. A year ago the count stood at 1,799.
