Riley Ann Sawyers, the 2-year-old girl who became known to the world as "Baby Grace," suffered a terrible beating that led to her death, according to an affidavit released in the investigation of her slaying.
According to a search warrant affidavit police were looking for a purple towel and shower curtain used to cover Riley's body in a bathtub after the girl was slain so that the child's mother couldn't see her dead body.
According to the affidavit, Zeigler and Trenor used two leather belts to beat the girl and that that Riley's head was held under water. Zeigler then grabbed the child by her hair and tossed her across a room onto a hard tile floor, according to the affidavit. Riley's face also was pushed into a pillow and a couch, according to the affidavit.
Riley was killed in July and her body was found in October stuffed inside a plastic storage bin that had washed ashore on Galveston. Police named her "Baby Grace" and made an intensive effort that eventually to her identification.
