Shahzad on Monday then proceeded to tell the court how he trained abroad for the attack and the depth of his motivation.
"One has to understand where I'm coming from," he told the court. "I consider myself ... a Muslim soldier."
Shahzad, 30, left an SUV rigged with a homemade bomb on May 1 in Times Square. The bomb did not go off and witnesses reported it authorities.
The admitted terrorist did not make a plea deal.
"I want to plead guilty, and I'm going to plead guilty 100 times over," the Associated Press quoted him as saying.
