The wreck Thursday that severely hurt Fort Worth Officer Richard Lambing is a stark reminder that people sworn to protect us face tremendous risks.
Some readers assert that high-speed police chases needlessly endanger officers and the public. Other cities ban them.
But police work is still dangerous.
Name a profession in which a person each day can encounters situations that could result in them being blind-sided or shot?
Police officers know this when they sign up, as do members of the military. Lambing is both.
The 15-year veteran of the police force is also a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve who serves as an intelligence analyst.
Civil service records show Lambing has received 29 commendations since joining the police force in 1995.
"He has friends all over the department," Chief Jeff Halstead said at the hospital where the officer was being treated. "A lot of his friends are here, showing their support. Like a lot of us, they saw the condition of the car on the news, and it raised a lot of concern for the officer.
"His injuries continue to remain very, very serious and we are praying for him."

We're here for you brother; whatever you need.
