Texas provided more than $1 million to an ex-con to run a summer food program in the Dallas area. Now, the Texas Department of Agriculture will investigate how the money was spent, Texas Insider reports. And in another case of closing the barn door after the horse has left, the Legislature may consider requiring background checks before forking over money for such programs.

"the Legislature may consider requiring background checks before forking over money for such programs."
What kind of deal is this that they MAY REQUIRE ???

"... Legislature may consider requiring background checks..."
How stupid can you be NOT to require background checks on someone to whom you are going give $1 million !
Why do we need a summer food program run by the Department of Agriculture anyway. Don't we have a multitude of other programs already in place?

A poster on the linked-site had a great point. Government (in any form) has NO business giving out money for charity. Let the churches and charitable organizations do this.

Maybe state should get out of summer food prgrams and keep tax dollars for taxpayers who paid money in 1st place SAFE
