A Johnson County sheriff’s deputy struck and killed a man who may have been hitch hiking, shortly after midnight Friday on U.S. 67 in Keene.
The man was identified as Rufus Wilson, 57, of Cleburne, by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office, where he was taken after the crash.
Wilson had been standing in the roadway when he was struck by the 2009 Dodge Charger patrol car driven by Deputy A. Jones, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.
The deputy was traveling northeast on the highway when Wilson was struck, the report stated.
Keene police and the sheriff’s department were in the area in response to a report of a hitch hiker waving his arms at passing motorists, according to a report by WFAA.com.
The website also reported that Sheriff Bob Alford called the incident an unfortunate accident and sent condolences to Wilson’s family.
The sheriff’s office will conduct its own investigation, WFAA.com reported.
