A 20-year-old college student whose testimony sent a retired San Antonio police officer to prison in 1999 for rape has recanted her story, leading the former officer's attorneys to ask that the verdict be overturned.
The Associated Press reports that Frank Navarijo, 73, has served 13 years of the 20-year sentence he received after being convicted of repeatedly raping the woman when she was 5. But the woman's testimony in court Friday raises the possibility that he could gain his release.
The AP refers to an article in the San Antonio Express-News, which describes how the woman said she "just wanted to set the record straight" and that her outcry and subsequent testimony against Navarijo were lies fed to her by a manipulative grandmother who "hated" the ex-officer.
She said her grandmother would tell her, "This is what (Navarijo) did to you."
