An annual event that is quickly becoming a hot destination for hard-core Texas Rangers fans takes on a deeper meaning tonight in support the family of 6-year-old Emilie Parker, pictured below with her father. She was among the victims Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
When he's not busy practicing law in Dallas, blogger Jamey Newberg covers the Rangers from the perspective of a devoted and highly informed fan. For the last several years he has compiled his posts and other analysis from the season into an archival coffee table book that many fans rush to buy.
This year's book release party is tonight from 6 to 9 at Sherlock's Baker Street Pub and Grill at 254 Lincoln Square, near Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. It will feature appearances by Rangers scouting officials, former Rangers outfielder Kevin Mench and current Rangers minor-leaguer Preston Beck, a University of Texas at Arlington product, according to Newberg's updates.
But most important, a wealth of Rangers memorabilia will be raffled off or auctioned, and the proceeds will benefit the Emilie Parker Fund. Donations will also be accepted. Emilie's father, Robbie Parker, lived in Arlington as a child and continues to follow the Rangers. The family still has relatives in North Texas.-Patrick M. Walker
