A man was in critical condition late Wednesday at a Dallas hospital after he reportedly ended a police chase in Irving by getting out of his vehicle and shooting at them with a semiautomatic rifle.
Officers returned fire and hit him several times, said Officer John Argumaniz, police spokesman. None of the officers were hurt, he added.
The incident began around 7:45 p.m. as officers tried to locate a man who, according to a woman who called 911, threatened to shoot her and her children, Argumaniz said.
It was unclear Wednesday what relationship she had with the man, but police were investigating the possibility that this was a case of domestic violence.
Officers, however, spotted a man in traffic who matched the description the woman gave. They tried to stop him in the 1600 block of East Pioneer Drive.
“He fled,” Argumaniz said. “We chased him into the 600 block of Balleywood, and he pulled into a driveway, a random driveway.”
The man got out of his vehicle and opened fire with the rifle, and that’s when he was wounded by officers, Argumaniz said.
He was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where he was in surgery late Wednesday, Argumaniz said. His condition was unavailable.
Other details would also have to wait until Argumaniz could be updated by investigators, he said.
