The fire was reported at about 4:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Vickery Boulevard.
Its cause was unknown Friday evening, but numerous firefighters and vehicles were sent, which is standard procedure on a commercial building, said Battalion Chief Richard Harrison, fire department spokesman.
The flames, however, were quickly snuffed when the crew on a fire engine hosed the building “with a big deck gun,” which flattened the structure, Harrison said.
The sudden action caused black smoke to quickly rise near downtown, but the fire was largely out by then, Harrison said. No injuries were reported.
