The jury deliberated about three hours on Friday before finding Mark Branigan, 49, of Fort Worth, guilty of murdering Danny Lafedge, 23, a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney’s office said. Branigan believed Lafedge disrespected him, according to authorities.
Prosecutors Kim D’Avignon and Lucas Allan presented evidence that on Aug. 2, 2012, Branigan fired at least six shots, striking Lafedge in the chest, abdomen, foot and hand while they were outside the Hills Apartment Complex in the 3200 block of Bridge Hill Drive, where both men were living at the time.
After the shooting, Branigan got rid of the murder weapon, changed his clothes and went to a separate apartment complex to give himself an alibi. During the trial in state District Judge Ruben Gonzalez’s court, Branigan testified that he killed Lafedge in self-defense, but the jury rejected that argument.
The jury also heard that Branigan had been convicted out of state for armed robbery and shooting at a police officer.
“His 49 years on this earth has been about mayhem, about crime, about hurting others, and about taking whatever he wants whenever he wants,” D’Avignon said. “His entire life has been lived by the gun.” -- Mitch Mitchell
