John Hobbs, 43, later died from gunshot wounds. He was a 21-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. His fellow officers (shown here) grieved the loss.
Hobbs' partner also was shot, and remained hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday.
The suspect, William Thornton, 28, was wanted on a probation violation warrant after serving time for a drug conviction and resisting arrest, according to The Associated Press.
"The suspect immediately opened fire on our officers," Police Chief Daniel Garcia said Tuesday. "They'll do everything they can do to get away, including a reckless abandon for human life and that's what we saw yesterday."
