Yesterday we linked to a WFAA report that the parents of Dammion Heard, the former Fossil Ridge champion wrestler, don't believe he took his own life earlier this month in Colorado.
Authorities in Gunnison, where Dammion was pursuing a collegiate wrestling career, say evidence suggests he died of suicide by hanging.
Today, Staff writer Domingo Ramirez Jr. got caught up with Dammion's dad, Gary, who explained why he is skeptical of the evidence.
Gary Heard said he conducted an investigation of his own where Dammion was found on BLM land near Gunnison.
“I took a mannequin out there and hung it up from the only tree that was there,” he said. “He couldn’t have been up there very long because you can easily see the tree from the road. And I don’t understand why the battery was taken out of the phone. And why would you lock your car if you’re going to commit suicide.
"I just don't get it."
Gunnison police, however, are still working the case.
“The investigation into Dammion Heard’s death is active and open,” Gunnison Detective Christopher Danos said Tuesday. “Interviews continue to be a part of this active investigation.”
