The Somali pirate brought for trial in the United States will be tried as an adult.
His defense attorneys could not convince the federal judge in New York that he was 15 years old and should be tried in the juvenile system. Prosecutors said that Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse was the brazen ringleader of the pirate group that attacked an American cargo ship off the Somali coast and had shot at the U.S. ship's captain.
U.S. Navy SEAL snipers killed three other pirates who were holding the captain in a lifeboat after Muse gave up because of a hand wound.
