Sunny Acapulco became bloody Acapulco on Wednesday when a shootout on a hotel-lined boulevard ended with as many as six people dead, the Los Angeles Times reported.
What unfolded at the famous Mexican beach resort must have been chaotic and unsettling to tourists who had been hoping the resort would not become entangled in the country's escalating drug war. It's not the first time that the violence reached Acapulco's streets. Gunfire there in June took 18 lives.
The newspaper reported that federal officers on patrol Wednesday came under fire after hearing gunfire and observing gunmen shooting at two men in a car. The attackers also fired at other vehicles while fleeing, hitting dozens of them, the newspaper reported.
Included among the shooting victims were a woman and her 8-year-old daughter, but no tourists appeared to be among those shot, the Times reported.
