Star-Telegram reporter Gene Trainor told us Sunday about the race among North Texas universities for Tier I research status, a contest for funding that could lead to major job creation. Read his story here. Then today, the student journalists at The Daily Toreador report that their university would prefer to not be grouped with "emerging universities," like UTA, UTD, etc. Read Jon Vanderlaan's story here. He quotes David McClure, Tech's assistant vice chancellor for communications and marketing, as saying the university was beginning a PR campaign to break away from the "emerging universities" label.
"Texas Tech already is a flagship; we already think Texas Tech is a top-tier university," the student paper quoted McClure as saying. "When these other people throw us into a group that includes these seven emerging universities that are vying for funds to become a tier-one university ... we really see ourselves as already 'emerged."

I agree. UTA and UTD are not in the same league as Texas Tech...Tech is far superior on many levels.
