The student newspaper staff at Westlake Academy is swelling. On Thursday, 110 students showed up for the first staff meeting of the year.
Interested students who could not make the meeting had to notify the newspaper adviser by phone or e-mail. “This is your personal responsibility test to see if you can follow directions well enough to be a real journalist serving your school and town community,” a flier stated.
Westlake Academy, the only municipally operated public charter school in the state, has a total student body of 471. That means one in four students at the campus are working on The Black Cow newspaper. And they don't even have a journalism program or newspaper office - students produce the paper at home and it is mailed to all Westlake residents. Editor-in-chief is junior Sarah Titus.

Dear Black Cow Staff,
How does one advertise in the Black Cow?
