Two teams from Morningside Middle School flew to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the national contest for Whiz Quiz this week.
They are the first Fort Worth school district team to reach the middle school level of the contest, said co-coach Linda Peters. The other co-coach is Charles Jacobs. Here's the school district's news release on the competition.
The group's trip was funded by the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, which also paid for the group to visit some landmarks during the trip, including Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon and the U.S. Capitol.
On Saturday, the group will continue with preliminary competition.
To prepare, the students practiced during Thanksgiving and winter breaks, Peters said.
"I'ts not often that kids beg you to practice," she said.
Students, all eighth graders except one, are:
- Lexi Stanford (seventh grade)
- Tomas Altamirano
- Alex Delgadillo
- Carei Frank
- Yontrell George
- Jennifer Huynh
- Adair Medina
- Paola Rios
