State Sen. Wendy Davis began a filibuster on the floor of the Texas Senate at 10:44 p.m. The Texas Senate has a fiscal matters bill it must pass by midnight in order to balance its budget before the session ends on Monday.
In the last 20 minutes, Davis has railed against the school finance deal Republicans agreed to in order to address a massive budget shortfall. Davis has also read letters from constituents concerned about school funding.
“The children of Arlington ISD really need you," read Davis from a letter from an Arlington resident.
Davis also expressed outrage that lawmakers did not seriously consider other ways to lessen the cuts to education such as repealing a tax exemption on high-cost natural gas production or utilizing more of the Rainy Day Fund.
"It’s not that we don’t have solutions," Davis said. "It’s that we’ve chosen not to use those solutions.”
Davis has sent out an email to supporters encouraging people to watch her filibuster live online.
Lt. David Dewhurst told reporters that Davis will effectively kill the budget deal if she speaks until midnight. he confirmed that Perry would call a special session starting this Tuesday if the budget deal dies.
