MINERAL WELLS -- Flags can fly anytime in a Mineral Wells cemetery after city officials edited a new policy that had drawn local national criticism from veterans calling it a "ban" on flags.
Cemetery officials have said they meant to allow flags attached to grave markers in Woodland Park Cemetery but not alongside in the grass. According to the Mineral Wells Index on Facebook, the new policy allows American flags and firefighters' flags may be placed on gravesites in approved vases, plastic sleeves or other flag holders.
The new rule allows only small flags flying no more than 3 feet high, according to the Index.
The previous rules allowed larger flags alongside graves around Memorial Day or Veterans' Day, but failed to spell out that flags could always fly if attached to the grave marker.
A Fox and Friends Weekend entertainment program (photo) triggered a national backlash when a host said Mineral Wells ruled "no more American flags."
