U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, threw his support Monday behind former Solicitor General Ted Cruz in the runoff race for the U.S. Senate.
Cruz and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst are facing off in a July 31 runoff to determine who wins the Republican Party's nomination to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison in the U.S. Senate next year. The winner in November will face the winner of the Democratic primary runoff -- either Paul Sadler or Grady Yarbrough.
"Our nation is facing a fiscal and economic crisis, and now is the time for people to speak with a clear conservative voice in Washington," Burgess said. "When I first ran for Congress, I had spent nearly three decades practicing medicine in North Texas. In Congress, I discovered very few elected officials willing to rock the boat, to make the hard decisions we need to turn our nation around.
"Ted Cruz is that strong, proven conservative leader, a constitutional scholar, and a fighter through and through," he said. "He'll lead the fight to stop the Obama agenda, and I look forward to fighting alongside Ted to repeal every word of ObamaCare."
