State Sen. Wendy Davis filed legislation Tuesday to increase funding for state veteran services by transferring $5 million yearly to the fund from unclaimed prizes at the Texas Lottery Commission.
The Fund for Veterans Assistance is administered by the Texas Veterans Commission and currently gets about $525,000 yearly from unused lottery money. Davis' bill, SB663, would increase that amount by nearly $4.5 million per year.
""This legislation would significantly increase resources for critical services to veterans and their families without raising taxes," said the Fort Worth Democrat.
The veterans assistance fund, created in 2007, gets most of its money from a Veterans Cash scratch-off ticket created in 2007. The ticket has generated more than $20.5 million for veterans organizations across the state, Davis' office said.
