Former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison released a statement today after learning about the death of Van Cliburn:
“A national treasure has passed away today. Van Cliburn was the greatest pianist of his time in the world, and yet made his home with his friends and family in his beloved Texas. His long-standing friendship with the Russian people eased tensions between our countries, as diplomats and governments could not. He will be missed by his many friends and admirers, of which I am one.”
