The Fort Worth City Council, as allowed by state law, cancelled the May elections for the unopposed Mayor Betsy Price and unopposed four council members Tuesday and declared them the winners of their offices.
Filing for the offices closed March 1, and the deadline for declaration of write-in candidacy also was March 1.
Along with Price, the council declared Mayor Pro Tem W.B. “Zim” Zimmerman, District 6 Councilman Jungus Jordan; District 7 Councilman Dennis Shingleton, and District 9 Councilman Joel Burns to be the winners of their offices.
"Congratulations to Zim, Joel, Dennis, Jungus and I," Price joked after the 9-0 council vote.
"It is a cost saving measure," Price said. "It'll save the city significant dollars" to cancel the election for the unopposed offices.
Four Fort Worth council races are contested: Place 2 incumbent Sal Espino vs. Jim Lane; Place 4 incumbent Danny Scarth vs. Paul Gardner; Place 5 incumbent Frank Moss vs. Gyna Bivens and John Tunmire; and Place 8 incumbent Kelly Allen-Gray vs. Kathleen Hicks.
