Yet there he is, in what may be the final episode of a long-suffering campaign, set to a dance-mix in a campaign ad released late Monday.
The vocalist croons that "David Dewwwwwwwww-hurst!" is, as the ad title says, "The Lieutenant Guv You've Gotta Love"!
The scenes start like your typical John Cornyn commercial, with Western guitar, oil derricks and a church seen from somewhere on Texas 121 in Fort Worth, at least according to a fake GPS map.
But suddenly, the funk beat kicks in, and you realize the vocal line says to a throbbing beat that Dewhurst is "savin' babies — protectin' ladies!"
The nightclub beat doesn't match the stiff politician in the background scenes, but at least it's an attempt to make Dewhurst look relaxed and cool, which he has rarely looked on-stage in his 15-year career in state office.
Then, the commercial ends with a steady drumbeat as graphics list 15 Dewhurst accomplishments such as "Balanced The Texas Budget Six Times" and "1,615,700 New Private Sector Jobs."
All true. But that's an old tune.
