American's on-time rate in September a dismal 58 percent

With thousands of flight delays and cancellations in late September and early October partly due to a pilots filing more maintenance requests, it was pretty clear that American Airlines was not going to win the top spot in the Department of Transportation's monthly on-time rating list.

And when the DOT released its on-time ratings report on Thursday morning, American ranked last with an on-time rating of 59 percent. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ranked sixth with an on-time rating of 86.5 percent for September.

Here's the rest of the list.

1. Hawaiian Airlines 96.4%

2. AirTran Airways 90.9%

3. Delta Air Lines 89.7%

4. Alaska Airlines 89.6%

5. US Airways 87.3%

6. Southwest Airlines 86.5%

7. American Eagle 86.5%

8. Mesa Airlines 85.5%

9. Virgin America 85.3%

10. Frontier Airlines 84.4%

11. SkyWest Airlines 83.6%

12. JetBlue Airways 82.8%

13. United Airlines 82.0%

14. ExpressJet Airlines 81.0%
