More cancellations, lost bags and fewer on-time flights in February, BTS says

Domestic carriers posted lower operational results in February as more flights were late or were cancelled and more bags were lost.

According to the new government report released on Thursday, U.S. airlines reported an on-time arrival rate of 79.6 percent in February, down from 86.2 percent in the same month last year. Carriers also canceled 2.4 percent of their domestic flights, up 1.0 percent from February 2012.

US Airways and its regional affliates had 34 tarmac delays over three hours. All of the flight delays occurred on February 16 involving flights either departing or arriving at Charlotte International Airport.

Airlines also reported a mishandled bag rate of 3.00 reports per 1,000 passengers, up from 2.64 reports per 1,000 passengers in February 2012. The Department of Transportation also received 899 complaints, a 29.7 increase, about airline service in February.

Hawaiian Airlines had the best on-time performance with 91.8 percent of its flights on-time. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ranked no. 5 with 84.5 percent of its flights on-time while Fort Worth-based American Airlines ranked no. 11 with 78.8 percent of its flights on-time.
