Only two-thirds of American Eagle flights arrived on-time in April, government report says

American Eagle had only two-thirds of its flights arrive on-time in April, the worst on-time performance of the major carriers surveyed by the government every month.

The regional carrier, owned by AMR Corp., also had the highest rate of canceled flights, cancelling 5.3 percent of its scheduled flights in April.

All of the airlines experienced a decline in on-time performance in April. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 77.3 percent of flights arrived on-time, down from the 86.3 percent on-time rate the carriers posted in April 2012.

Hawaiian Airlines remained in the top spot with 93.0 percent of its flights on-time. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines posted a 78.4 percent on-time rate for ninth place while American Airlines had 72.3 percent of its flights on-time for twelfth place.

The carriers also lost more luggage in April as they reported a mishandled baggage rate of 3.08 reports per 1,000 passengers, up from a rate of 2.63 in the same month last year. The Department of Transportation also received 1.8 percent more complaints from passengers, receiving 1,076 complaints about air service up from the 1,067 complaints filed in April 2012.

There were two flights that had tarmac delays over three hours in April: a Delta Air Lines flight from New York LaGuardia to Orlando delayed for 183 minutes on April 19 and a United Airlines flight from Pittsburgh to Denver on April 8, delayed for 182 minutes.
