80 percent of Friday's departing flights canceled at DFW Airport

In its latest media update, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport confirmed that 80 percent of its Friday flight schedule has been canceled due to the weather.

Currently, it is 26 degrees at the airport where crews are working to de-ice the few planes that are taking off and trying to keep runways clear of ice.

Airlines have canceled over 680 departures, the airport said. According to FlightStats.com, 725 departures and 689 arrivals have been canceled at DFW with American Airlines cancelling 704 flights across its network and regional carrier, American Eagle, cancelling 497 flights.

"DFW Airfield Operations crews are plowing, treating and monitoring the runways, ramps and taxiways on the airfield," the airport said in a statement. "DFW has maintained runway capacity sufficient to satisfy the demand for airline departures with at least one runway open throughout the day."

DFW has seven runways it uses for operations. The airport is also providing extra amenities, such as water and snacks and coloring books to passengers who are stuck at DFW.
