American passenger traffic up 5.0 percent, US Airways passenger traffic up 7.0 percent for December

In its first joint monthly traffic release, American Airlines and US Airways both posted increases in passenger traffic in December.

American's operations grew passenger traffic 5.0 percent in December as its capacity also increased 1.1 percent. Its load factor grew 3.1 percentage points to 83.3 percent for the busy holiday travel month.

Unit revenues at American also rose 9 percent compared to the same month last year.

At US Airways' operations, passenger traffic rose 7.0 percent as capacity also increased 3.6 percent. Its load factor was up 2.7 percentage points to 84.7 percent in December.

Unit revenues rose 12 percent compared to December 2012, the carrier said.
