70.7 percent of U.S. airlines flights arrived on-time in February

With severe winter storms in February, U.S. airlines posted an on-time arrival rate of 70.7 percent in February, down from 79.6 percent in the same period last year.

However, there were no tarmac delays of more than three hours, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Hawaiian Airlines had the best on-time arrival rate with 90.1 percent while ExpressJet had the worst, with only 59.0 percent of its flights arriving on-time.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ranked 7th with an on-time rate of 70.8 percent while Fort Worth-based American Airlines posted an on-time arrival rate of 73.9 percent for fourth place.

Since American did not perform better than its peers in on-time arrivals, baggage handling or customer service, employees did not earn any additional cash bonuses under the new operations incentive program started at the carrier this year.

U.S. carriers canceled 5.5 percent of their domestic flights in February, up from 2.4 percent in February 2013. Airlines also posted a mishandled baggage rate of 4.21 reports per 1,000 passengers, an increase from the same period in 2013 when its rate was 2.99.

The U.S. Department of Transportation also received 30 percent more complaints from consumers about their airline experience. The DOT received 1,171 complaints in February, up from 901 in February 2013.
